A boy celebrating children's day

Odunpazari Municipality celebrated the 23rd April National Sovereignty and Children’s Day in Odunpazar square. At the Event held at Odunpazar by Odunpazar municipality on Monday, April 23, more than 100 people participated.

National Sovereignty and Children's Day was first officially declared a national holiday by the Republic of Turkey in 1929 with the set date of 23 April.

To celebrate the national sovereignty and children’s day the Municipality of Odunpazari had prepared an event for children’s in Eskisehir. In the event that took place on one of the biggest and crowded square in Eskisehir. Children celebrated this day with enthusiasm by doing theaters, by reading poems, and magicians, juggling shows, inflatable playgrounds and children concerts were part of the show.

Burak is one of the participants and he made an opening speech. He started his speech by thanking Kemal Ata Türk “I would like to thank Ata Türk for giving us the best gift in the world. And it’s this day. If it wasn’t for him these holidays would not be celebrated. I love him from the bottom my heart.”

The events started at 13.00 and continued throughout the whole day. Children and their parents celebrated this day all together with enthusiastically, along with the program many surprises were presented to children’s.

Children’s day celebration in Schools

National Sovereignty and Children's Day was celebrated in several schools. Özer Sehir Koleji is one of the schools who celebrated the day. The school prepared a half day program. In the program students showed what they prepared to parents and to invited guest. Song, poem, dance theater and conversation were among the programs of the day.

Ayse a mother of one boy shared her thoughts about the program and the day; “It makes me happy to see children’s celebrating this day, my son had a performance and it went very well. Students must know about their country, their rights and other things as well. So, celebrating this day is like a good reminder for parents, for teachers simply for all participants as we have a lot work to do with our children’s.”

Asiye Erdağ an English teacher in Özer Şehir Koleji said, “Today is a very special day for the childrens. Its their day. It is a celebration for them and it shows that we care about them. The childrens deserve it and I’m sure they will remember and cherish this moment in future.”

Sevinç Bicer is an English teacher in Özer Şehir Koleji, she said; “Celebrating this day is not an option. Its an essential. Because this day is a remembrance of Kemal Atatürk for what he did for children and us.”

Children's Day is a day recognized to celebrate children. The day is celebrated on various calendar dates in different countries. In Turkey it is celebrated on the 23rd of April. For Turkish children this day is not only a holiday it is beyond that. It’s a unique day. The founder of Turkish republic Mustafa Kemal Ataturk presented April 23rd to all the world’s children to emphasize that they are successor of the future.

According to Wikipedia the story behind this day is as follow; Children's Day was begun on the second Sunday of June in 1856 by Reverend Dr. Charles Leonard, pastor of the Universalist Church of the Redeemer in chelesea, Massachusetts Dr. Leonard held a special service dedicated to, and for the children. Dr. Leonard named the day Rose Day, though it was later named Flower Sunday, and then Children's Day.

All in all, children day started in turkey and now is celebrated all over the world.
